My artwork Sentimental Longing explores nostalgia through a layered collage of images, text, and textures that mirror the fragmented nature of memory. On the left, the cursive word “Nostalgia” reinforces the act of looking back without directly labelling the piece. Surrounding it are motifs—a Ferris wheel, a beetle, fading portraits, and eyes—functioning as symbolic fragments of recollection. These images appear in no logical sequence, echoing how memories overlap and resurface unpredictably. The Ferris wheel evokes a holiday and the idea of cycles, while the two blue faces, adapted from Daniel Arsham, recall another personal moment. I selected imagery that felt both sentimental and visually cohesive. A definition of nostalgia is included—“a sentimental longing or affection for a period in the past…”—yet it is surrounded by fading visuals, emphasising the tension between cherishing the past and recognising change. Sentimental Longing attempts to hold both truths at once.
